چکیده

Interstellar polarization at far-infrared through millimeter wavelengths (λ ∼ 0.1 – 1 mm) is primarily due to thermal emission from dust grains aligned with magnetic fields. This mechanism has led to studies of magnetic fields in a variety of celestial sources, as well as the physical characteristics of the dust grains and their interaction with the field. Observations have covered a diverse array of sources, from entire galaxies to molecular clouds and protostellar disks. Maps have been generated on a wide range of angular scales, from surveys covering large fractions of the sky, down to those with arcsecond spatial resolution. Additionally, the increasing availability of observations at multiple wavelengths in this band allows empirical tests of models of grain alignment and cloud structure. I review some of the recent work in this field, emphasizing comparisons of observations on multiple spatial scales and at multiple wavelengths.

Polarized Far-infrared and Submillimeter Emission from Interstellar Dust

Polarized far-infrared and submillimeter emission is calculated for models of nonspherical dust grains that are constrained to reproduce the observed wavelength-dependent extinction and polarization of starlight. For emission from regions where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the line-of-sight, the far-infrared emission is expected to have substantial linear polarization at wavelengths λ...

Grain Alignment and Polarized Emission from Magnetized T Tauri Disks

The structure of magnetic fields within protostellar disks may be studied via polarimetry provided that grains are aligned in respect to magnetic field within the disks. We explore alignment of dust grains by radiative torque in T Tauri disks and provide predictions for polarized emission for disks viewed at different wavelengths and viewing angles. We show that the alignment is especially effi...

Micron Dust Emission from High Redshift Objects

We report observations of a sample of high redshift sources (1.8 ∼< z ∼< 4.7), mainly radio-quiet quasars, at 350μm using the SHARC bolometer camera at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Nine sources were detected (∼> 4σ) and upper limits were obtained for 11 with 350μm flux density limits (3 σ) in the range 30 125mJy. Combining published results at other far-infrared and millimeter wavelen...

Polarimetry in the Visible and Infrared: Application to CMB Polarimetry

Interstellar polarization from aligned dust grains can be measured both in transmission at visible and near-infrared wavelengths and in emission at far-infrared and sub-mm wavelengths. These observations can help predict the behavior of foreground contamination of CMB polarimetry by dust in the Milky Way. Fractional polarization in emission from aligned dust grains will be at the higher range o...

Micron Dust Emission from High Redshift Quasars

We report detections of six high-redshift (1.8 ≤ z ≤ 6.4), optically luminous, radio-quiet quasars at 350 μm, using the SHARC II bolometer camera at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Our observations double the number of high-redshift quasars for which 350 μm photometry is available. By combining the 350 μm measurements with observations at other submillimeter/millimeter wavelengths, for e...
